I don’t know how else to say it…

…but some people simply appear unwilling to understand certain theological issues, people, or ideas.

Well, unwilling or possible unable.

This goes double for the current craziness with Rob Bell and his book Love Wins.  I’ve seen more than a few reviews of the book, like this one, that should make their authors embarassed.  Apparnetly Rob Bell is a mystery to some, and some people have the audacity to apply the words “evangelical” and “orthodox” to Bell…simply because he applies them to himself.

If you would like first hand information on Rob Bell and this book, check out these:

1.  Bell’s NPR interview which is here.

2.  Martin Bashir’s own review with Bell’s interview with Bashir which is here.

3.  Lisa Miller’s (Newsweek) Interview with Rob Bell in video here and in transcript here.

4.  Rob Bell’s interaction with Adrian Warnock (evangelical blogger/theologian) on the UK Christian radio show Unbelievable, online here.

5.  A review of the Warnock interaction, as well as the NPR interaction, by James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries, available here.

If you think you understand the book “Love Wins”, and if you think Rob Bell is orthodox, you either don’t actually understand what orthodoxy is, or you need to take some time and do a little research into Rob Bell and listen to what he actually says in defending his own book.

He tells Lisa Miller that, even though she openly claims that she’s Jewish and openly rejects Jesus, Jews (like her) who openly reject Christ can still somehow get into heaven.  No repentance.  No sacrifice of Christ for sin.  No anything.  They just somehow get in, discover that Christ somehow got them in, and Rob doesn’t really know how.  He just knows that love wins.

*facepalm*

  1. Finished his book, was terrible. For all the controversy it provoked, I was sad to notice that Bell in Love Wins never interacted with any serious scholar representing the other side…or account for verses that goes contrary to his view and try to explain them.
Anyhow, just my quick thoughts. I’ve just posted my critique of his theological method behind his soteriology.

    • Rob Bell has never pretended to be a scholar…just a “thinker” who’s asking questions that other people, he seems to feel, are ignoring. He’s not really concerned with understanding the issues at hand, and he’s not really concerned with even honest debate.

Like most guys of his sort of ilk, his idea of dialogue is almost comically one-sided.

Your comedy/irony continues to amaze me! Are you doing a road show where you continue to hilariously and obliviously act as the proverbial pot calling the kettle black? Where can I get my ticket!?

    • Feel free to unpack whatever vague point it is that you are trying to make.

Are you suggesting that I flee from dialogue?

Notice how I have not editted or removed your comment?

Interesting to me how I’m inviting conversation but you’re the one who refuses to actually engage in discussion. Thanks for confirming my point.
